The winches used to be remote control, but they weren’t precise enough that way. John took them apart and rewired them so they could either be wireless or controlled through switches. Most cars have an OBDII port and diagnostic code readers are fairly simple and cheap. Not so for buses. Instead of spending over $1000, John built his own diagnostic tool and wrote custom software to connect the desktop computer to the bus ECM. This custom cable went from USB -> RS232 -> RS485 -> J1708 -> J1587. That allowed him to record raw ECM data from the Caterpillar engine.
